This nutball (if people take her seriously enough) could cause damage beyond all repair, given the opportunity. She would attempt to pass laws ensuring that only Christians are elected to office, laws to criminalize homosexuality and deny their civil rights, and laws to make Christianity the officical religion of the United States and ban all others. (Assuming she hasn’t already tried it, that is…) In other words, this is one sick fuck we’re dealing with here. But don’t take my word for it, read her own comments during an interview in a recent issue of the gripping, hardcore pages of the Florida Baptist Witness. Here are some snippets to raise your hackles:
“If you are not electing Christians … then in essence your are going to legislate sin,” Harris said in answer to a question about why Florida Baptists should care about this primary election. “They can legislate sin. They can say that abortion is all right. They can vote to sustain gay marriage.”
In response to a question about what role “people of faith” should play in politics, Harris said: “We have to have the faithful in government, and over time, that lie we have been told, the separation of church and state, people have internalized, thinking they need to avoid politics, and that is so wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers. And if we are the ones not actively involved in electing these godly men and women… then we’re going to have a nation of secular laws. That’s not what our founding fathers intended and that certainly isn’t what God intended.”
Harris said that if leaders are not Christians, “then average citizens who are not Christians, because they don’t know better, we are leading them astray and it’s wrong.”
Among the positions Harris traced to her faith, she said she opposes stem cell research, supports a marriage protection amendment for Florida and opposes civil rights for gays.
Holy shit. These are deranged, dangerous people who have zero business getting into politics if they can’t keep their superstitious religious bullshit in check. There is a separation of church and state in this country, no matter how much these people try to blur the lines.
Of course, after her verbal diarrhea hit the stands, she made an effort to “clarify” her position:
Harris’ campaign released a statement Saturday saying she had been “speaking to a Christian audience, addressing a common misperception that people of faith should not be actively involved in government.” The comments reflected “her deep grounding in Judeo-Christian values,” the statement said, adding that Harris had previously supported pro-Israel legislation and legislation recognizing the Holocaust.
In other words, she claims to have been simply talking out her ass because she was addressing a religious audience reading a religious journal. So she’s either a whacked-out religious psychopath or just another asshole politician who says anything to get a vote. Either way, we already have a hopelessly unsalvageable political system and we don’t need this kind of trash out there making things worse. But she may not be around for long, as it turns out:
State GOP leaders – including Gov. Jeb Bush – don’t think she can win against Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson in November. Fundraising has lagged, frustrated campaign workers have defected in droves and the issues have been overshadowed by news of her dealings with a corrupt defense contractor who gave her $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions.
Well, now! Traditional Christian values…at a price. No surprise there, hmmm? Maybe it’s time for this woman to do the world a favor and crawl back under the elephant turd she slithered out from. We’ll get along just fine without you, dear.
