Why do some people have such a hard time acknowledging the existence of white privilege? I’ve had several very heated conversations with someone in my family who is simply unable to admit that white people, especially white men, still enjoy unimaginable privilege in this country and continue to pass laws against those who aren’t like them. Women, gays, nonwhites, immigrants, and non-Christians are the targets of these laws, and white men (and sometimes women) are always behind them.
And yet, this person claims to be a victim, something so ludicrous that I couldn’t help but laugh when they said it. White people are being blamed for many of the country’s problems, and this makes you a “victim”? Oh, cry me a river. Acknowledging white privilege isn’t a personal attack on any one person, it is simply recognizing the reality of life in this country. My fellow whitefolk who have a problem with this need to just get over it.
