The MPAA: a sham now more than ever

The reigning douchebags at the MPAA have rejected a poster for a new documentary about our military’s use of torture, saying it’s too graphic, too violent, to damaging to the American psyche to be seen in public.  Wow, how bad could it be?  As you can see, it’s really not so bad.  In fact, the image is very real:

The “Taxi” ad art is actually an amalgam of two pictures. The first, taken by Corbis photographer Shaun Schwarz, features the hooded prisoner and one soldier. Another military figure was added on the left.  Ironically, the original Schwarz photo was censored by the military, which erased his camera’s memory.  The photographer eventually retrieved the image from his hard drive.

“It’s the photo that would not die,” Gibney said.  “This movie is not a horror film like ‘Hostel.’  This is a documentary and that image is a documentary image.”

I absolutely love it when suppressed/censored information stubbornly resurfaces, thanks to people who want the public to see it.  And here’s the best part:  an MPAA spokesman actually said “We treat all films the same.”  What a crock of shit!  If you haven’t seen This Film Is Not Yet Rated, you need to rush out and buy/rent it right now.  It’s a fantastic documentary about who the MPAA is, how they think, why its members are shrouded in secrecy, and how their political and religious bias controls what American audiences get to see in theatres.  It’s great background for a story like this.

Anyway, I’ve seen worse posters than this, by far.  And here’s proof, thanks to Alas, a blog which brilliantly points out some of the MPAA’s most glaring self-contradictions in their efforts to protect The Children from harmful images.  How can anyone look at what they’ve approved and what they’ve deemed “inappropriate” and not think something is seriously fucked up here?

  1. ” saying it’s too graphic, too violent, to damaging to the American psyche to be seen in public.” I doubt it’s the American Psyche they’re trying to protect…. but more of CYA.

  2. I think the key phrase in all this “damaging to the American psyche”
personally I think we have the largest country of whiny vaginas on this chunk of spinning rock.
    1. the vast majority of the US population really does have a problem facing the fact that despite being one of the oldest democracies, we have done more than a few REALLY BAD THINGS. We have to justify everything we do as being “for democracy” because we have to be the good guy in any conflict. Never have we said “we should have kept our fat faces out that…”
    2. the governing bodies and military really need us to have this mentality. It justifies bad decisions. well, bad for other countries, the poor and non-christians. And well, if it’s “for” democracy it really can’t be bad. Right.
I think it’s time for a collective American intervention. Face the fact that we, as a whole, are weak, self-absorbed children
