Slate Magazine is featuring a fascinating slideshow called The strange history of racist spokescharacters. It’s that darker, nastier part of our history that most would like to forget, cheerfully reflected in advertisements for various products of the time.  The difference now, of course, is that even though racism is still a problem, using it to sell products can get your company’s ass kicked.  Just ask Abercrombie & Fitch about their racist t-shirts!
