Fred Phelps and his little band of demonic sickos are nothing new…they usually come out of the woodwork when they smell a good opportunity to get on the news by demonstrating at gay peoples’ funerals. They chant “God hates fags!” and hold up signs saying that the deceased deserved to die for being a filthy homo scum, and that all fags deserve to get AIDS and perish, etc. You know, the usual stuff. Lately they’ve diversified a bit by demonstrating at the funerals of soldiers who died in Iraq. Their reasoning: America tolerates homos, so God punishes America by killing its soldiers. Yeah, whatever, you fuckin’ jerkwads.
Anyway, here’s something new: a motorcycle group called the Patriot Guard Riders is now following Phelps and his gang around to their demonstrations and holding their own counter-demonstrations. They drown out the sickos’ chants with loud cheers, they form a line to block Phelps’ evil banners…they basically do all they can to make sure that Phelps’ gang does not totally ruin the day for the survivors. They’ll ride hundreds of miles to do their thing, and with 5000+ members, it looks like they can handle whatever Phelps can throw their way. Their website (linked above) is interesting, and I like their simple mission statement: “1) Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. 2) Shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.”
Yeah, I’m against the war and all that, but anybody demonstrating at a soldier’s funeral — whether they’re against gays or the war or any other reason — needs to be countered with something like this. There’s simply no excuse for causing the family further anguish just to further your idiotic agenda. Let the families mourn in peace.
