Go George!

The Guardian has a short interview with George Clooney about his latest films which attack corruption in government.  The following quote really grabbed me:

“I was at a party the other night and it was all these hardcore Republicans and these guys are like, ‘Why do you hate your country?’  I said, ‘I love my country.’   They said, ‘Why, at a time of war, would you criticise it then?’  And I said, ‘My country right or wrong means women don’t vote, black people sit in the back of buses and we’re still in Vietnam.  My country right or wrong means we don’t have the New Deal.’  I mean, what, are you crazy?  My country, right or wrong?  It’s not your right, it’s your duty.  And then I said, ‘Where was I wrong, schmuck?’  In 2003 I was saying, where are the ties [between Iraq] and al-Qaida?  Where are the ties to 9/11? I knew it; where the fuck were these Democrats who said, ‘We were misled’?  That’s the kind of thing that drives me crazy: ‘We were misled.’  Fuck you, you weren’t misled.  You were afraid of being called unpatriotic.”

Wow.  It’s nice to hear something like this coming from a “wishy-washy Hollywood liberal.”  I have to agree:  Democrats have gotten pussified over the last few years, afraid to say what needs to be said because they don’t want to be labeled as traitors.  Howard Dean is the only one who has dared to be a little more brash than the rest, but he always manages to come off looking like a dipshit.  It’s discouraging, but maybe he’s the best the Dems can do.  Anyway, after reading this interview I have a newfound respect for Clooney, whereas before I had more or less ignored him.  He doesn’t appear to be a typical Hollywood liberal who’s anti-war just because it’s fashionable, and he’s not an obnoxious, over-the-top manipulator of facts and footage like Michael Moore.  Now I’m interested in seeing these “serious” films he’s doing…

Say it!
