Today I received a
spam petition with a long list of names attached, asking me to help save the country from certain destruction because the Pledge of Allegiance is not being enforced in all of America’s schools:
Subject: Pledge Petition
Begin forwarded message: PLEASE PROTECT THIS MESSAGE AS IT CONTAINS THE SIGNATURES OF MANY PERSONS WHO LOVE OUR COUNTRY AND THE FLAG.
School Petition “Please go to the bottom of the List” –
PETITION TO REINSTATE PLEDGE TO THE FLAG IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
If you don’t forward the petition and just stop it, we will lose all these names.
Gee, I guess that anyone who doesn’t sign the petition is an America-hating flagburner. And notice the wording: “reinstate pledge to the flag in public schools,” as if the pledge has been banned everywhere. Yeah, as if! Hint for ya: it’s not. Anyway, I managed to Google up an online version of this petition, or at least a similar one:
If not for God, where would this great nation be? If not for this pledge that was made 100 years ago, where would the great people of this nation be? Our freedom of speech, our freedom of choice, our rights make us who we are…AMERICANS!!! This “Nation Under God” gives us our rights to be able to believe that by our Prayers, our Hopes, our Faith and our Dreams. We have the rights to our FREEDOM.
Whoah, are they petitioning for a pledge or a prayer? Sometimes I wonder. (I also love how they capitalize the words “hope”, “faith”, and “dreams.” It’s so Hallmark card-like.) This is simply another attempt to insert religion (masked as patriotism) into our schools. Their question of “Without God, where would we be?” can be answered with another question: “Without religious zealots, where would we be?” I’ll give you a clue: it starts with “p” and ends with “aradise.”
And pardon me, but doesn’t freedom of speech include freedom from being forced to speak? Christ on a cracker! You can’t make kids love their country by forcing them to recite words…that is, unless you’re trying to brainwash them or something. But these people would never try that, would they? Uh-huh. Forced recitation is not freedom, it’s coercion. Stop the programming and stick to educating. Sheesh!
As for the email, it warned me that those hundreds of names would be lost if I didn’t forward it on to everyone I know. Oops, did I just click Delete? Damn.
