Forget viruses and trojan horses, and even spam — spyware is the biggest threat to the internet as we know it. To quote this story, thanks to spyware “people are feeling less adventurous, less free to do whatever they want to do online.” But the upside is that people are now starting to be more cautious and suspicious about what they browse and install on their PCs. That is, they are starting to be as cautious as they should have been 2-3 years ago when spyware really began to rear its nasty head. As I’ve said in the past, ignorance of spyware/viruses/spam is no longer an excuse, because they are being covered in the media and attacking more people than ever before. It’s up to the casual surfer to gain a basic knowledge of protection against such things. It’s really not that difficult — there are countless resources online, and you don’t even have to switch to a Mac to do it.
