A pair of girder beams that happened to collapse into the shape of a crucifix during the 9/11 bombings may soon be installed at the soon-to-open memorial.  Of course, seeing any two sticks crossed anywhere in nature automatically means it’s a sign from God, right?  Of course!  Because only a being of infinite knowledge, wisdom, and presence in the universe would give proof of his existence by such random, roundabout means.  *snort*  But I digress…

An outspoken atheist has challenged the erection (?) of this so-called crucifix, and ohhhhh the Christians are angry.  In fact, they’re angry enough to kill.  That is, judging by the Fox News Facebook page, which was flooded with death threats once they aired the story.  That’s right, people are willing to make public death threats over this.

Personally, if they must install a religious symbol there, I think there should be one for each religion represented by the victims, since nearly half weren’t Christians.  Or don’t put anything there at all, just let it be.  But regardless of what you think of the issue, in no way does it need to devolve into death threats.  But I guess that’s where some people go right off the bat.  My, such tolerance!  Be sure and look at the screenshots he’s posted as proof.  Stay classy, Foxtards!

The Fox News Facebook page got over 8,000 death threats posted on its wall after the Communications Director for the American Atheists, Blair Scott, appeared on the network’s “America Live” discussing the group’s lawsuit hoping to stop the erection of a crucifix at the World Trade Center Memorial.

Today’s July 4th, when Americans profess loudly just how proud they are to be Americans.  Flipping through Facebook this morning I see a dozen posts about it already…sigh.

Am I lucky to be an American with all the freedoms we enjoy (at least, until they’re finally chipped away)?  Yes, I am.  But proud to be an American?  I usually reserve pride for things I actually accomplished myself.  I just happen to have been born here, you see…it’s really all about luck.  So my answer is no, I’m not proud of being an American in that sense.  Too much pride leads to arrogance, and I think too many Americans are already arrogant enough.

And speaking of updates, I forgot to mention that after a four-year “hiatus” (interpret that however you like), my side-blog Flag-O-Rama has been blessed with new posts.  I went out and grabbed a bunch of new shitty patriotic products to display and ridicule, so check it out!  (I’m hoping to keep adding a couple of posts each week, but don’t hate me if I don’t… :-)

Here’s something I didn’t know that almost made me spew my lunch all over my monitor:  in Yankee Stadium, being present during the national anthem and “God Bless America” is mandatory.  They literally chain you into the aisles.  If you try to leave for any reason you’ll be cuffed and thrown out of the stadium, like this guy was when he tried to go to the bathroom during the all-important Musical Moments of Patriotism and Religious Fervor.  Of course the NYPD says that he was drunk and disorderly, which he claims is ridiculous…and seeing how the NYPD attacks bicylists at random these days, I’m not too inclined to believe them.

Lacking a more eloquent way to express my feelings on this, all I can say is:  fuck this sports-nationalism shit.  Why in the world are people singing the National Anthem at any sports event?  What is that?  What purpose does it serve–to remind us that we’re Americans?  I think we’re well aware of that, thank you.  Attending a baseball game doesn’t make you a good American.  I can understand their desire to do it for a while after an emotional event like 9/11, but forcing this on people years after the fact is just plain nuts.

The same goes for making the players pray before each game, what a crock.  Assuming there’s some bearded man in the sky who takes orders from athletes, do you really think he gives a shit about favoring one team over another?  I think he’d have more pressing issues to attend to.  These guys never blame God when they lose, either…they just accept it as “His will.”  Oh, I’d love to see some football player leaving the field after a crushing defeat, shaking his fist in the air and cursing the heavens.  But I’d have to actually watch football to see that, so nevermind…

I forgot to post this horrific little story on the 4th of July.  It’s about some nutjob who had the American flag tattooed onto his face:

Last year, he began a three-month transformation of his face.  It hurt.  He held still for two hours at a time as the tattoo grew.  First the blue field and stars.  Then came the red stripes.  Fifteen hours, $1,500.  In his mind, through the pain, he said, “Thank you, God.  I want the American flag on my face.”

Can you imagine?  I’m glad it hurt.  Crazy comes with a price, after all…

I haven’t posted to my Flag-O-Rama blog in over a year, but some military guy recently discovered it (he used his .mil email address, the foolish sucka) and decided he was offended.  He left this comment regarding the post Beyond the fringe:

listen dumb ass the marines have different uniforms now and they are not called fatigues the are a combat uniform! and if you were to acually take a good look at the picture it is a doll not a real child fuckin’ retard! if you don’t like it then get the fuck out of the country!

Wow, you can almost hear the veins popping out on his forehead!  Who knew that military types were so defensive about their wardrobe?  Maybe he’s peeved by the fact that the “combat uniform” in question was being worn by a doll. I do love the “get outta the country” bit, it’s just so precious.  I posted a reply on the blog, so you can read it there using the link above. :)

Some poor soul out there got out his digital crayon and scrawled this pathetic prayer chain email to spam all his friends with.  It’s got all the usual “Yay USA!  Screw France!” stuff, with some other nonsense about the ACLU. And, of course, people spammed others with it, unwilling to “break the chain.”  Sigh.  Too bad they didn’t realize that this one’s a hoax and nobody can prove its claims.  Tee hee!

Hoax or not, I’ve seen dozens of others like it.  I’m not as offended by the shmaltzy content as much as the chain letter aspect.  The idea that “breaking the chain” will result in a bad outcome is one of the oldest and stupidest junk-mail hoaxes ever, and it’s even more moronic in email form.  It’s like those things you were handed by some kid in high school: “Pass this around! Don’t break the chain or you’ll end up like Mrs. Pitlick of Dillhole, KY who ignored this letter and was killed in her own bed during a freak accident involving a blimp and some monkeys.”

Feh.  This kind of patrio-religious dildonics reminds me of how Chuck Palahniuk referred to prayer chains in one of his books:  “A spiritual pyramid scheme.  As if you can gang up on God.  Bully him around.”

The AFP wire is carrying a fun little story about what the author calls an epidemic of flags across America during the 4th of July patriotic frenzy.  Epidemic?  Oh, that’s sure to raise a few hackles.  Good, ’cause it’s true.   It’s an outright infestation.  Of course, I’m not talking about flags in front of peoples’ homes or in public spaces, but all the patriotic marketing bullshit that blankets the landscape this time of year.  (By the way, some of these items are still on sale at Flag-O-Rama!   Do you have your USA steak branders yet?)

Oh, this is a fun one.  The new Superman movie came out this week, and people are saying all kinds of things about this new, re-imagined superhero.  They’re saying he’s boring, that he’s gay, that he’s too brooding, etc.  But here’s a new one: some are complaining that Superman isn’t portrayed as American anymore, because he (gasp!) appears to gives a shit about the rest of the world.

Apparently “truth, justice, and the American way” isn’t uttered in the movie, but does it mean the same thing today as it did 50 years ago?  To the rest of the world, “the American way” often stands for arrogance, power, greed, invasion, profit, dominance, laziness, occupation, complacency, and a whole bunch of other nasty things.  Yeah, there’s some good stuff in there about freedom and whatnot, but it’s often muted by the negatives.  This is the sad truth about how we are perceived in many other countries.  With expensive movies needing to score big worldwide in order to recoup costs, do these whiners actually think that the filmmakers were going to turn Superman into SuperUSApatriot?  Rah-rah-rah, he saves the day…for us!  But besides all that, isn’t Superman from another planet?  He’s an alien.  He was sent to Earth to help the entire human race, not just the ones with the most money or muscle.

Sigh…this shouldn’t be an issue.  Get over yourselves, people.  How long before people start bitching because Superman doesn’t go to church?

The Guardian has a short interview with George Clooney about his latest films which attack corruption in government.  The following quote really grabbed me:

“I was at a party the other night and it was all these hardcore Republicans and these guys are like, ‘Why do you hate your country?’  I said, ‘I love my country.’   They said, ‘Why, at a time of war, would you criticise it then?’  And I said, ‘My country right or wrong means women don’t vote, black people sit in the back of buses and we’re still in Vietnam.  My country right or wrong means we don’t have the New Deal.’  I mean, what, are you crazy?  My country, right or wrong?  It’s not your right, it’s your duty.  And then I said, ‘Where was I wrong, schmuck?’  In 2003 I was saying, where are the ties [between Iraq] and al-Qaida?  Where are the ties to 9/11? I knew it; where the fuck were these Democrats who said, ‘We were misled’?  That’s the kind of thing that drives me crazy: ‘We were misled.’  Fuck you, you weren’t misled.  You were afraid of being called unpatriotic.”

Wow.  It’s nice to hear something like this coming from a “wishy-washy Hollywood liberal.”  I have to agree:  Democrats have gotten pussified over the last few years, afraid to say what needs to be said because they don’t want to be labeled as traitors.  Howard Dean is the only one who has dared to be a little more brash than the rest, but he always manages to come off looking like a dipshit.  It’s discouraging, but maybe he’s the best the Dems can do.  Anyway, after reading this interview I have a newfound respect for Clooney, whereas before I had more or less ignored him.  He doesn’t appear to be a typical Hollywood liberal who’s anti-war just because it’s fashionable, and he’s not an obnoxious, over-the-top manipulator of facts and footage like Michael Moore.  Now I’m interested in seeing these “serious” films he’s doing…
